Feb 24th:  Membership Meeting

and Installation of Officers

The winter weather this year has not cooperated with our plans for a Holiday/Winter/January Potluck, so we'll be meeting, instead, on the usual Thursday (February 24th) to conduct business and install our officers for the current term.

We haven't been together as a branch for a couple of months (isn't Maryland weather unpredictable!) so it's important that we all attend this meeting. See you there.

Please remember to bring your new or renewed membership application for our Membership Drive Campaigne to the February 24th meeting!  Each member who brings a new member or renewal will be entered into a drawing for a special surprise!!

Career Night Volunteers Needed

Our branch and the Boys & Girls Club of Westminster have partnered to provide Career Nights for the club's children.  We would like to hold monthly sharing sessions centered around specific careers to expose and inform children of possible career paths they may choose.  Sharing sessions will center around what is needed to prepare for the profession, the daily expectations, the positives and negatives of the job , and other pertinent information about the career.  We have created a "sample organizer" for the presenters to ensure a lively and "hands on" type of presentation that will engage children.  The children in the club have expressed an interest in the following careers thus far:

Plumber, Mason, Architect, Entertainer, Dog trainer, Recreational Therapist, Teacher-Actress, Engineer, Forensic Scientist, Air Force

If you are involved in any of these careers or know someone who is, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can try to make up a schedule of speakers.  We are also open to other occupations if you are interested in sharing your story. We need you to help children now prepare for the future.

Scholarships for African-American Students

 complete list here
Even if you do not have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does, and to anyone and everyone that comes to mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have donated money for scholarships to African Americans, a great deal of the money is being returned because of a lack of interest or awareness.

Take the initiative to get your children involved. Money shouldn't be returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it.

Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, friends with children etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful additional money can be.
